Benefits of Individual Therapy

Benefits of Individual Therapy for Opioid Abuse

Individuals who are struggling with opioid addictions have more to get past outside of their physical use of their chosen substance. The causes for addiction are not rooted in just the physical dependency that a drug creates; rather it is rooted in the many emotional issues that have contributed to/stemmed from the development of the addiction itself. It is for this reason that individual therapy can be highly beneficial in addressing the issues behind an addiction.

Individual therapy is a treatment methods that allows individuals to work with a counselor on a one-on-one basis. There are numerous benefits associated with an individual who works on his or her recovery from opioids like painkillers, morphine, or heroin within an individual therapy setting, such as:

  • Identifying trauma that has impacted the development of/the continuation of substance abuse
  • Creating new outlooks related to the underlying causes of opioid addiction
  • Developing a healthy skill set that helps individuals cope with negative emotions
  • Working through recovery setbacks or successes through treatment
  • Creating strategies that help individuals avoid situations where their recovery might be challenged
  • Developing personal goals for the present and future

It is important for an individual to understand his or her behaviors, emotions, and reasons behind the choices they have made so that he or she can be successful in creating a future that is healthy and free from substance abuse. Individual therapy is an excellent resource for this type of discussion, as it allows an individual to feel supported when working with a counselor.

In addition to the above listed benefits, those who participate in individual therapy will also experience the following:

  • Increased sense of self-awareness
  • Increased self-confidence
  • Reduced stress
  • Improved self-esteem

These benefits can help provide individuals with a foundation that prepares them for continually achieving success in recovery without the restraints of addiction.
